What is Health Literacy

  • Health literacy relates to how people access, understand, and use health information, to benefit their health.
  • Health literacy has two (2) main factors:
    Individual Health Literacy
When individuals can find, understand and use health information; for example, complete health care forms or understand and use the health care system
    Health Literacy Environment
When services develop policies, processes, and materials, which affect the way the individual engages with the health system.
